We are pleased to announce that this year's Vernon Harrison Award for the most distinguished PhD thesis in rheology has been awarded to Dr Hugo Castillo-Sánchez from University College London for this thesis entitled "Channel flow instabilities of Complex Fluids". The Award recognises excellence, creativity and novelty in rheological research.

The judging committee noted Hugo's original and significant contribution to the field of flow instabilities important to commercial processing operations, and commended the three publications appearing in the Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics that resulted from Hugo's PhD work.

Hugo will present his award lecture at this year's Mid-Winter Meeting hosted by Swansea University, to be held virtually 18-19th January, 2021.
