Dr Andreia Silva is a Royal Society Industry Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, working on the rheology of biofluids and biobased materials
Andreia is a bioengineer by training, with a PhD from the University of Strathclyde on the flow dynamics of vitreous humour and its replacements. She joined the University of Edinburgh in 2017 and since 2019 has been part of the Edinburgh Complex Fluids Partnership, working with industrial partners across five sectors on projects ranging from hand sanitisers to fudge making and biosurfactants.
Her interests lie in biofluids, biobased materials, polymers and pharmaceutical fluids that show non-Newtonian behaviour. As a Royal Society Industry Fellow, Andreia splits her time between two industry collaborations, one on how viscoelasticity governs spreading and removal of fluids, and one on biobased alternatives to petrochemical materials.
